Songs Of Silence (LP)
Vince Clarke
Amoeba Review
Songs of Silence is the debut solo album from synth-pop legend Vince Clarke. Contemplative, atmospheric, and enveloping, these instrumental tracks are more in line with the oeuvre of pioneering ambient/New Age composers like Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre than anything in Erasure or even Depeche Mode's catalogs. The tracks were composed around an individual droning note from the Eurorack system of modular synths, then layered and textured with gauzy soundscapes, plaintive cello, and cascading keyboard arpeggios. Endowed with a deep, swirling undercurrent of unspeakable emotion, Songs of Silence is a fascinating and lovely listen.
