Songwriter (LP)
Johnny Cash
Amoeba Review
Believe it or not, there are still more treasures from the Johnny Cash archives to be unearthed. The tracks on Songwriter were originally penned by Cash in 1993 when he was between recording contracts, just before he met Rick Rubin and embarked on an extraordinary new phase of his already extraordinary career. The demos were fleshed out by Johnny's son John Carter Cash, who recruited an all-star cast of contemporary musicians to create new backing tracks to replace those from the original '93 sessions (as a result of sound quality issues). In the capable hands of a cast of musicians including Marty Stuart, Peter Abbott (Average White Band), Vince Gill, Dan Auerbach, and Cash's touring bassist, the late Dave Roe, Songwriter truly sings. Featuring vocals from Waylon Jennings on two tracks from the '93 sessions.
