Swamp Dogg’s Sorry You Couldn't Make It has the worn-in, cozy feel of a long-lost classic. Maybe that’s because it has all the trappings of one. The cult soul singer revels in sly humor before effortlessly slipping into deeply emotional ballads. The piano is cheerfully plaintive, the guitars are fuzzy and funky, and the organs are weird and wobbly. A national treasure who has flown under the mainstream radar for quite some time, on this outing Swamp Dogg teamed up with a newer generation of Americana-inspired song peddlers, including Jenny Lewis and Bon Iver, as well as beloved folkie John Prine. The results speak for themselves. Sorry You Couldn’t Make It is a rollickin’, rootsy delight.
