Soul Is Heavy (CD)
Nneka
Amoeba Review
Nneka’s reggae-tinged Hip-Hop soul is a glorious thing, eschewing easy categorization, reflecting her upbringing in Nigeria, time spent living in Germany and influence from American Hip-Hop. If one must compare her to Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, she combines Badu’s soft drawl with Hill’s ability to connect directly to the heart. It’s almost easy to miss how she combines a mélange of influences because of how effortless it sounds in songs like the her immensely listenable duet with Ms. Dynamite, “Sleep,” which is like a dancehall lullaby. “Restless” is a touching ballad, skillfully relying on little more than her voice and acoustic guitar and piano, similarly to Adele. Eslewhere, she reveals a darker side, rapping on the title track and the grimy, apocalyptic “God Knows Why,” featuring Black Thought.
