Sounds Of '66 (CD)
Sammy Davis, Jr. , Buddy Rich
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 10/19/2010
“Relax, sit down, and swing with me,” says extraordinary vocalist Sammy Davis Jr. at the beginning of this live Las Vegas performance. He is joined by an equally superb talent, jazz drummer Buddy Rich and his big band. This duo proves to be dynamite, with Buddy Rich providing a ferocious and phenomenal jazz swing, giving Davis ample air under his wings to truly soar. The album opens with a fiery and impassioned performance of “Come Back To Me,” which swings to such extremes it has the audience squealing, and covers such material as the Bacharach/David classic “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” “What Kind Of Fool Am I,” and closes with the fantastic “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone.” Many of these performances prove to be even better than the original recordings as they capture a real raw energy between Davis and Rich. For any Sammy Davis Jr. fan this album is an absolute must-have.
