SPARK finds Chicago duo Whitney reborn. During the pandemic days of 2020, the band relocated for a time to Portland, where they worked on songs, dealt with apocalyptic smoke of forest fires, and took their sound in a new direction. The folk pop of yesteryear is gone, traded in for a more buoyant classic pop meets funk mood. Falsetto vocals, romantic strings, and plaintive piano weave in and out of juicy throwback melodies. Is it sunshine pop? Is it golden age of soul sounds fused with indie rock? Whatever it is, it’s the sound of a band grappling with some seriously tough questions and coming out the other side with a sense of renewal and some seriously sweet harmonies.
