Jonny Greenwood’s original soundtrack for Spencer, the Pablo Larraín film about Princess Diana’s nightmarish holiday with the royal family in the final days of her disintegrating marriage, is every bit as disconcerting and beautiful as it should be. Greenwood vividly captures the emotional lava bubbling beneath Christmas at Sandringham’s sedate, elegant veneer—it’s an often unsettling, frequently lovely, and always intriguing listening experience. The score features regal, poignant string arrangements, woozy jazz melodies punctuated by frenetic percussion, and dignified yet dreamy harpsichord; like the royal family itself, the music steps into its role with exquisite precision. Then, when you least expect it—bam! We’re off on an unexpected, strange new sonic detour mirroring Diana’s inner turmoil. Brilliant, bold, and provocative.
