Spirit World Field Guide (CD)
Aesop Rock
Amoeba Review
The versatile, lyrically-gifted Aesop Rock returns with the excellent Spirit World Field Guide. After last year’s collaboration with experimental psych producer Tobacco and the video game-influenced Freedom Finger album, Spirit World Field Guide sounds like a natural synthesis of the two. The flow is relentless, the beats range from blippy bangers (“The Gates”) to darkly hypnotic “Pizza Alley”). Aesop Rock never lets his foot off the gas during the entire 21-track outing; his ability to constantly innovate over a career that has spanned nearly two and a half decades is astonishing. Spirit World Field Guide sounds as timely, essential, and exciting as any of the artist’s now legendary albums. Essential listening.
