Spooky [Clear Vinyl] (LP)
Lush
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 12/23/2024
The debut album for Lush, 1992’s Spooky sets the scene for things to come with dreamy pop that moves along at a molasses pace, leaving such a sweet residue that the resulting sugar rush is just enough to propel forward. A little detached at times and not always exciting (in fact seldom is it anything more than drifting), the album is no less beautifully crafted and those soft digressions seem to be going places. Standout tracks include “Nothing Natural,” which picks up the pace and shows more dynamic shift than many of the other tracks, and “Monochrome,” which goes in a different, more subdued direction, providing lovely ethereal reflection.
