Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 (1980-1985) is a treasure trove for Bob Dylan fans. The collection includes 54 previously unreleased outtakes, alternate takes, rehearsal recordings, live performances and other curios drawn from the period in which Dylan recorded the albums Shot Of Love, Infidels, and Empire Burlesque. As a chronology of an artistic journey, this latest entry in the Bootleg Series is top-notch; the alternate takes available here differ markedly from those released on earlier Series compilations, charting the creative paths Dylan chose to traverse and serving up intriguing new angles to previously heard tracks. The album is certainly a joy for completists, but it's not just for completists either. Dylan fans of all levels will find much to enjoy in these heartfelt, authentic, brilliant compositions.
