Stay Proud Of Me (CD)
NoSo
Amoeba Review
NoSo’s Stay Proud of Me is one of those debut albums that’s so nuanced, so impactful that it’s hard to believe this is a first record. LA-based Korean-American artist Abby Hwong’s musical moniker is short for North/South, inspired by the eye-roll-inducing question “Which Korea are you from?” that Korean-Americans have to deal with on the regular. NoSo’s songwriting obliquely explores the frustrations of the Asian-American coming-of-age experience through their layered vocals, washes of sound that rise and fall likes waves, and gorgeous guitar work. Emotional and epic, Stay Proud of Me is sweeping in sound, intimate in scope, and absolutely essential listening.
