Amoeba Review

Tír na nÓg was an Irish folk duo in the vein of The Fairport Convention when the duo first began. They eventually morphed into more of a progressive folk sound, and with their third release, Strong In The Sun, the band tapped into a sound that was uniquely their own. The album opens with a driving rock version of Nick Drake’s “Free Ride” and continues with a Celtic-flavored rock feel, particularly on songs like the title track “Strong In The Sun” and “Cinema.” Psychedelic folk inclinations can be heard on the fantastic “Love Lost,” a rhythmically driven tune with hand drums and feverishly played acoustic guitars. The band gets more progressive on songs like “Most Magical,” which features a jazzy electric piano and flute. The album was produced by Procol Harum’s Matthew Fisher, which may explain their progressive sound. But whatever path the band takes musically on the album, there is always a folk element at the roots. It should definitely impress fans of the folk genre (particularly from that time period).
