Swaddling Songs (CD)
Mellow Candle
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/26/2010
Childhood friends Alison Williams and Clodagh Simonds started singing together as children, forming their first group Gatecrashers while still attending Dublin’s Holy Child Convent. The girls were eventually joined by bassist Pat Morris and guitarist David Williams, and they turned into the shamefully overlooked progressive folk rock group Mellow Candle. Their sole album, Swaddling Songs, was released in 1972, and while the group garnered accolades and appreciation from fellow musicians (they opened shows for Steeleye Span, Genesis, and The Chieftains), the album failed to make a critical splash. Just why the critics didn’t pay the album proper attention is confusing because while listening to this release, it is impossible not to be immediately taken by its gorgeous arrangements and stunning vocals. The album goes from energetic folk rock numbers like the spastic “The Poet And The Witch” to the lovely piano-driven “Reverend Sisters” and is on par with the songs of artists revered in the genre, like Pentangle and The Fairport Convention (if perhaps even more progressive leaning than those bands). Although the band did not last much longer after this release, the album was rediscovered in the late 1990s and fetched prices in the hundreds of dollars. Thankfully it has since been reissued, and the U.K label Acme included bonus tracks of an earlier single “Feeling High”/”Tea With The Sun.”
