Taj Mahal demonstrates why he's a legend on Swingin’ Live at the Church in Tulsa. Performing with the Taj Mahal Sextet — Bill Rich (bass), Kester Smith (drums), and Bobby Ingano (guitar/Hawaiian lap steel) — plus dobro player Rob Ickes and guitarist/vocalist Trey Hensley, the group heats up Leon Russell's old studio stomping grounds in Tulsa. "Queen Bee" is a smoky, rootsy slice of downhome blues. "Lovin' in my Baby's Eyes" features Trey Hensley on vocals, delivering a slightly more bittersweet than sweet country number. Whatever genre the Sextet is working in, you know it's gonna be stirring, evocative, and soulful. Swingin' is a rich listening experience, an album that'll make you feel alive.
