On their eighth studio album, Parquet Courts address the kind of casual existential crises we deal with constantly in society, mulling over isolation, technology, consumerism and more. ‘90s college rock, post-punk, and Brit-pop swirl together satisfyingly throughout, even as the songs occasionally branch out into the electro sounds the band has experimented with on other albums. “Walking at a Downtown Pace,” with its perfect driving beat for the subject matter, calls to mind the band Kasabian, while “Application/Apparatus” has a robotic post-punk feel contrasted with noodling lead guitar. “Homo Sapien” reins in a rawness akin to The Hives with tight circular guitar, while “Plant Life” has a sleepy psychedelic groove.
