The Ballad Of Darren [Blue Vinyl] (LP)
Blur
Amoeba Review
On their first album in eight years, The Ballad Of Darren, Blur gets contemplative. Damon Albarn has described the album as the band reflecting on their journey, for better or worse, through life. "The Narcissist" is sweetly melancholy, with choruses that echo Damon Albarn's voice in a way that feels both haunting and taunting — appropriate for a track about a failed relationship turned lingering memory. "St. Charles Square" feels very punk rock, a chronicle of regrets that verges on a horror story, complete with werewolf howls and urgent guitars. The Ballad of Darren is poignant and moving yet fun and surprising: in short, it's everything you love from Blur, distilled into a short but sweet collection of tracks.
