The Ballad Of Dood & Juanita [Natural Color Vinyl] (LP)
Sturgill Simpson
Amoeba Review
Sturgill Simpson returns with the epic The Ballad of Dood & Juanita, a genre-spanning concept album that defies categorization. This isn’t your standard concept album collection of songs around the same topic—nope, Simpson has stated that he wanted to write an album that tells one story, beginning to end, over the course of its runtime. That’s Ballad. The songs careen from bluegrass to classic country, from gospel to a cappella and into mountain music. Simpson’s backed by the same band who played on his recent Cuttin’ Grass releases and Willie Nelson contributes vocals on the excellent “Juanita.” For fans of Simpson’s vibrant brand of traditional country, this is a must-hear.
