The Big Mess (CD)
Tanlines
Amoeba Review
Tanlines' The Big Mess feels like one of those classic college rock "change your life" albums. The melodies are grand in scope, the lyrics painfully pointed, all the more because they feel so instantly emotionally familiar. Haven't we all found ourselves on the other side of the titular "Big Mess"? Likely yes, but if we didn't at the time have a transcendent mix of Replacements-esque rock 'n' roll with simmering electronic pop and haunting country instrumentation, Tanlines are here at last to find the beauty in the darkness. This is the type of album that sneaks up on you with a subtle yet devastating punch to the gut.
