The Great Heathen Army (CD)
Amon Amarth
Amoeba Review
Amon Amarth’s 12th studio album, The Great Heathen Army, is a triumphant dose of melodic death metal inflected with traditional metal. The latter is the most noticeable in “Saxons and Vikings,” a fist-pumping track featuring Biff Byford of Saxon, whose evil treble complements Johan Hegg’s deep growl. The band’s rapid-fire rhythms, harmonizing guitar solos, and tales of Viking myths – delivered with utmost solemnity - are consistently rousing. “Find A Way Or Make One” is another highlight, while “Dawn of Norsemen” is suitably dramatic and anthemic.
