The Joshua Tree [20th Anniversary Edition] (CD)
U2
Amoeba Review

With their fifth studio album, The Joshua Tree, Irish rock group U2 became international superstars. This was the culmination of eight years of artistic growth and hard work, during which time U2 rose from the early '80s post-punk pack to greater recognition with War, a Top 40 single the following year with "Pride (In the Name of Love)," and still wider exposure in a breakout performance at Live Aid in 1985. For The Joshua Tree, U2 retained the producing duo of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who had helmed the group's previous LP, The Unforgettable Fire. Once again, Eno and Lanois add lush atmospherics to U2's wide open, anthemic sound. The Joshua Tree, though, is very different from its predecessors. The album's emotional tenor is more uplifting, placing a hopeful spin on Bono's lyrical themes of struggle and redemption. Also different is the band's embracing of Americana. From the cover photo shot in the California desert to the harmonica solo in "Trip Through Your Wires" to Bono's invocation of "the arms of America," the vast expanses of the Western United States permeate the record, helping to render its unique and timeless sound. A worldwide #1 album that spawned two US #1 hits ("I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With or Without You"), The Joshua Tree won a Grammy for Album of the Year and is often ranked amongst the very best albums of all-time.
