Soulsavers have teamed up with Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan for their new album. These are the real Songs of Faith and Devotion, the musical equivalent of There Will Be Blood led by a cat-like preacher.

Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan proves the perfect foil for U.K. producer duo Soulsavers, whose grandiose gospel-rock perfectly sets the stage for the elder statesman of gothic new wave’s religiously and sexually conflicted lyrics. Gahan’s plea “set me free” on “Presence of God” is delivered with a perfect sense of frustrated resignation while strings and acoustic guitar swirl morosely around him. A chorus of gospel singers backs him up beautifully on “Longest Day,” its heaviness landing it in good company with Spiritualized’s recent excellent album, Sweet Heart Sweet Light. But the mix of soulfulness and rock pomp also should intrigue fans of more mainstream bands like Muse, Coldplay and Smashing Pumpkins, as The Light the Dead See lends spiritual music a welcome rock ‘n’ roll appeal — and vice versa.
