The Million Things That Never Happened (LP)
Billy Bragg
Amoeba Review
Billy Bragg’s new album takes a characteristically shrewd look at culture wars, the internet and the pandemic, among other timely topics. The lush, melodic “Mid-Century Modern” offers the excellent lyric, “The kids that pull the statues down challenge me to see the gap between the man I am and the man I wanna be.” “Freedom Doesn’t Come for Free” is a funny and lively folk ballad about Libertarians trying to create a so-called utopia. Another highlight is “The Million Things That Never Happened,” a truly poignant and beautiful pandemic song with its raw, haunting violin and Bragg’s sincere deep voice singing about separation and loss.
