Shiftless Paris intellectual Alexandre (Jean-Pierre Léaud) readily strung along his unhappy working-class live-in lover Marie (Bernadette Lafont) as he searched for outside affairs, and found one when he pursued hospital nurse Veronika (Françoise Lebrun). Veronika's confrontation of the two leads to a polyamorous relationship-but the arrangement may irrevocably wear on all three.
