The Odd Couple (CD)
Gnarls Barkley
Amoeba Review

The Odd Couple, the second studio album put out by the dapper duo Gnarls Barkley (Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo), is another brilliantly crafted endeavor. The album is less erratic and wild than St. Elsewhere, but still delivers a delightful whimsicality and originality. The Neo music—or “Euro Soul,” as Cee-Lo calls it—is tight and expertly arranged. Right off the bat the lively and spirited first single, “Run,” is an example of this, and it was released to critical acclaim. The second single “Who’s Gonna Save my Soul” also became an instant hit, but it was the soaring, quick-tempo song “Going On” that topped the charts. The Odd Couple is one of those wall-to-wall albums, where the singles are only indicative of the whole. Every track on the album is illustrious in its own right, especially the inspiring ballad “Open Book,” where tribal beats guide the melancholic vocals.
