The Other Side Of Make-Believe (CD)
Interpol
Amoeba Review
Interpol takes their sound into dreamy, romantic new territory on The Other Side Of Make-Believe. The Other Side of Darkness, you might call it, considering the band’s early penchant for driving rhythms, gloomy atmospherics, and pointedly bizarre lyrics. This new sonic direction was a choice on the part of the band; after wrapping a successful tour in March 2020, Interpol purposefully chose not to wallow in the too obvious negativity of the time, but instead to explore how, as vocalist/guitarist Paul Banks put it, “the nobility of the human spirit is to recover and rebound.” Of course, this is all filtered through a post-punk lens, so you can still expect angular guitars, aching vocals, and downbeat melodies—but with an air of hope and love for life that brings a prismatic depth to this compelling album.
