Let’s be honest: most tribute albums are instantly novel but ultimately forgettable. That’s not the case with the excellent, exciting The Problem Of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang Of Four. The tracks on this double album were chosen by the artists themselves—all of whom were inspired by Gang of Four and Andy Gill in their own musical careers—and it’s truly impressive how each artist has reimagined these classic, well-loved songs in a way that’s uniquely their own. Idles sound even more ferocious than the original on “Damaged Goods.” La Roux also takes the song on, lending a truly surprising, invigorating alt-pop interpretation that takes the track in unexpected directions. Warpaint brings a dreamy, almost otherworldly dimension to “Paralysed.” Flea and John Frusciante recruit the Silverlake Conservatory Youth Chorale for an edgy, rather haunting take on “Not Great Men.” These reinterpretations are a welcome addition to the Gang of Four canon; they might even become some of your new favorites.
