The Rainbow Children (CD)
Prince
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/26/2010
The Rainbow Children is the twenty-first studio album by Prince, and the first in many years to feature his actual name, as opposed to the notorious, unpronounceable symbol/glyph (i.e., “the artist formerly known as” conundrum). It was released by NPG/Redline Entertainment in November of 2001, and distributed through independent outlets on the Internet. The material is devoted to his religious views and faith as a Jehovah’s Witness. The background is particularly jazzy. Prince went through so much spectacle in the 1990s – feuding with his record label, flooding the market with releases to fulfill his contract, attempting a Clive Davis-engineered comeback – that’s it’s hard to get worked up about The Rainbow Children one way or another. Fans will want to check it out.
