The Slim Shady LP (CD) [Explicit]
Eminem
Amoeba Review

One of the most disturbing albums of the 1990s came at the tail end, in 1999, when Eminem released The Slim Shady LP—an album that takes seemingly innocuous hip-hop beats into dangerously dark territory. Even with the embedded expectation of brutal beats and thuggish delivery that was so popular at the time, the Detroit rapper flips the script on itself. Eminem’s method was to use melodic beats under a shy, almost boyish delivery, rapping about murder, rape, and torture—all innocence being bled out. “Guilty Conscience” recounts the stories of several nefarious characters who make interesting studies all on their own, and with bone-chilling verisimilitude. “97’ Bonnie & Clyde” is a sick story of—ostensibly—Slim Shady himself taking his young daughter on an excursion to dump the body of his ex-wife. Fictional, yes, but when the track is placed against the well-publicized war between Eminem and his estranged wife, Kim, and their young daughter . . . things get a little too close for comfort.
