The Turning Wheel (LP)
SPELLLING
Amoeba Review
For her third studio album, the enigmatic Chrystia Cabral AKA SPELLLING embraced a theatrical atmosphere, incorporating orchestral instruments into her synth-heavy sound. The Turning Wheel is divided into an upbeat and warm first half and a darker, more dramatic second half, a bit like Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love – Cabral’s vocals also sound like Bush’s higher register on the title track. Thus “Little Deer” is a delightful opener with a ‘70s-pop-meets-Broadway feel, while “Boys at School” is elegant and moody on the keyboard like early Bat For Lashes, but with unexpected classic rock guitar near the end. SPELLLING continues to make intriguing, unusual music worth delving into.
