Three's Co. (CD)
The Tyde
Amoeba Review
John Schacht 08/13/2010
The Tyde’s third record bounces from song to song like a summer beach ball between Brit-flavored power pop and SoCal paisley country rock, distilling the band’s transatlantic musical obsessions into 11 cuts of sun-soaked bliss. Singer/songwriter Darren Rademaker has sanded down the last psychedelic remnants of his Beachwood Sparks connection and turned up the volume on the Graham Parker-meets-Beulah pop rock, leaving just enough twang to trace the Tyde’s lineage. Rapid-fire rockers “Do It Again Again,” “Too Many Kims” “County Line,” and “The Pilot” blast past on fuzzed-out guitars, Casio and Rhodes riffs, and rhythms pulsing with the breezy insouciance of top-down convertible rides along the coast. The icing on this cake is Rademaker’s lyrics, delivered in a comforting vocal blend of Lloyd Cole and Ray Davies: country shuffle “The Lamest Shows” is a meditation on growing old gracefully in rock; “Ltd. Appeal” is all bouncy blues and angelic Beach Boys’ harmonies that belie the withering shots aimed at trend-spotters from fashionistas to Surfers for Jesus; and on the pedal steel-accented “Aloha Breeze,” Rademaker gently exhorts us to “come to the beach” with him for succor. With Three’s Co. as the soundtrack, the answer has to be “yes.”
