To Be Cruel [White Vinyl] (LP)
Khanate
Amoeba Review
Khanate are back with their first album in fourteen years, the menacing To Be Cruel. Clocking in at around an hour, the three tracks on the album are feedback-drenched, anguished exercises in slow burn sonic horror. Opener "Like a Poisoned Dog" bristles and broods as it builds its way to an all-out assault. "It Wants to Fly" is the type of track you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley: beginning with glacial intensity and heavy, punishing riffs, as the lyrics kick in, the track becomes deeply unnerving in all the right ways. The title track is equally blistering, starting with a slow crescendo of intensity that never lets up, like one of those nightmares with an unshakable sense of unease. To Be Cruel is a welcome return for the inimitable Khanate.
