Under The Midnight Sun [White Vinyl] (LP)
The Cult
Amoeba Review
The Cult's first new album since 2016 takes a stately, brooding approach to their legendary goth-meets-stadium rock sound. The delightful "A Cut Inside" is a growling, driving track that smooths out a bit on the chorus, giving Ian Astbury space to breathe, before launching into Billy Duffy's melodic solos and an uplifting outro. "Give Me Mercy" leans more toward alternative rock with its mid-tempo, plaintive chorus, while still maintaining that majestic quality unique to the band. And then there is the dynamic "Knife Through Butterfly Heart" that knocks it out of the park.
