UR FUN (CD)
Of Montreal
Amoeba Review
Of Montreal’s sixteenth studio album, UR Fun, is a neon dream bursting with addictive melodies, bouncy good humor, and style for miles. Frontman Kevin Barnes took inspiration from classic pop records by Cyndi Lauper and Janet Jackson and weirdly -- considering the highly goofy and psychedelic tendencies of Of Montreal -- this makes total sense upon listening to the album. As Barnes explores the highs and lows of being in a relationship (in this case, the album delves into his romance with songwriting partner Christina Schneider), the songs shimmer and shine with synth-pop glamour, the melodies occasionally veering into darker territory before reaching once more for the sun. It’s tremendous fun, served up with a side of self-deprecating cynicism.
