Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie and Savages’ Jehnny Beth teamed up for Utopian Ashes, an album of darkly intriguing songs about a relationship’s dissolution. Gillespie’s world-weary voice pairs well with Beth’s direct urgency and both keep you interested in the lyrical drama. “Remember We Were Lovers” is mournful but stirring with its well-placed horns, while “Chase It Down” combines funky guitar and a soulful atmosphere with ‘90s alternative/indie rock.
