Version 2.0 (CD)
Garbage
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
The second album for Garbage, 1998’s Version 2.0 maintains the strength of the group’s eponymous debut, but does little to differentiate itself. Merging alternative rock with techno pop, Garbage is led by Shirley Manson’s purring, undulating vocals—and it’s those same captivating vox that distinguish the band in the ever-changing pop panorama. “Special” is a rollicking, more-pop-than-techno offering that uses catchy harmonies and a soaring pace, and the hit song “I Think I’m Paranoid” speaks timelessly to a particular audience. Not overly provocative—but certainly sexy enough to set the mood—Version 2.0 may not let you go all the way, but it gets you safely into second.
