Amigo The Devil

Danny Kiranos adopted his musical alter ego presumably after listening to Springsteen’s Nebraska for the hundredth time. How else to explain music that relishes in acoustic-driven confessionals of despicable characters, murderers, and other antiheros? Vol. 1 is a compilation of Kiranos’ bandcamp EPs: a trio of recordings spanning from 2010 to 2015, first made available on CD last summer and now released on vinyl. Full of songs that sport homey Americana instrumentation, including innocuous banjos and chirping church organ, accompanied by sample choruses like “I hope your husband dies,” Amigo the Devil’s infectious darkness elevates the fringe genre of “murder folk” from entertaining curiosity to something morbidly compelling. David Fincher would love this one.
