The band formerly known as Mandolin Orange are reborn as Watchhouse on their enchanting, atmospheric new self-titled album. Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz share vocal duties over the course of the album, each adding their own haunting qualities to the musical tales they spin. Elements of psychedelia slip into the duo’s lilting Americana. Bluegrass influences imbue the songs with a timeless quality. The band sings of climate change, relationships, and our extremely online culture while the melodies seem to drift to us from some time/space portal into last century Appalachia. It’s an intriguing mixture of thematic elements that not every band could pull off, but Watchhouse certainly do with aplomb. Lovely, yearning, and very special.
