Welcome 2 America (LP)
Prince
Amoeba Review
Recorded in the spring of 2010 and then mysteriously abandoned by Prince before its release, Welcome 2 America is a blast from the past that sounds unbelievably prescient. The tracks come from a series of semi-improvised sessions Prince did at Paisley Park; the melodies have a strong funk and jazz influence while the lyrics dissect consumerist society and the influence of corporations and big tech. The tracks are smart and searing, danceable and polished. Fans will find lots to love here. Welcome 2 America is a welcome new discovery in Prince’s catalog and one that invites another look at his latter years’ discography.
