What Are They Doing In Heaven Today? (LP)
Washington Phillips
Amoeba Review

After a long-ass wait the good folks at Mississippi Records unleash a second pressing of some of their earlier, impossible-to-find vinyl editions of primitive and beautiful music. Everything on Mississippi is absolutely essential, but for me this LP is the one I don't think I'd wanna live without. Washington Phillips was a gospel singer from the 1920s that played an odd, toy piano-like instrument called the Dolceola and sang in a high-register voice that would make your tough-as-nails dad tear up. I know these recordings have been readily available on a Yazoo CD forever, but it's so great to have them on vinyl and in a breathtaking package that does justice to the music. Will Oldham fans take note . . . your favorite weird beard covered Mr. Phillips' "I Had a Good Mother and Father" on his first LP. (Aaron Aldorisio)
