Gang of Four is an influential English rock band that combined punk attitude and social consciousness with funky, danceable rhythms. Formed in 1977 by Jon King (vocals), Andy Gill (guitar), Dave Allen (bass), and Hugo Burnham (drums), the band released the Damaged Goods EP in 1978 and their debut full length, Entertainment!, in 1979. Rolling Stone named Entertainment! one of their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. After two additional consecutive albums - Solid Gold (1981) and Songs Of The Free (1982) - Allen left Gang of Four in 1982 to form Shriekback, while Gill, King, and Burnham recorded Hard (1983). In 1984, the band called it quits.
In 2005, the original lineup reuinited to record a selection of their favorite tracks on Return The Gift. Burnham left in late 2006 to pursue an academic career and Dave Allen left in 2008. They were replaced by Mark Heaney and Thomas McNiece respectively. In January 2011, Gang of Four released their first new studio album in 16 years, Content, on Yep Roc.
