When Smoke Rises (CD)
Mustafa
Amoeba Review
Delicate-voiced Toronto artist Mustafa debuts with his new full-length album When Smoke Rises. Elegantly blending folk with R&B, the singer/songwriter writes sensitive songs about turbulent life in the inner city. The title of “Stay Alive” - a warm ballad with snatches of spoken dialogue - sums up a lot of his earnest message throughout. The spacey, floating “Air Forces” was co-produced by Jamie xx and Frank Dukes, and features samples from a Sudanese tribal chant, but the real highlight is “Ali,” a lovely tribute to a friend who was killed in 2017, which starts out spare and builds to an emotional outro.
