When The Poems Do What They Do (LP)
Aja Monet
Amoeba Review
Aja Monet demonstrates the power of poetry on the aptly named When The Poems Do What They Do. The Brooklyn-born artist attained the Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam poetry award title in 2007, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award for Poetry in 2019, and was nominated for an NAACP Literary Award for Poetry in 2018. Which is no surprise once you spend some time with her work: Monet brings gravity, groundedness, rage, joy, and resilience to these tracks, moving seamlessly from one emotion to the next in the course of a single spoken word performance. She is a healer, an organizer, a brilliant Black woman, and When the Poems Do makes the world shine a little brighter as Monet illuminates not just what's wrong, but how we can create a better future.
