Kiefer’s When There's Love Around is a vibrant journey into modern jazz. The album’s textures and tone slowly evolves from its opening sense of stress and insignificance, finishing up in a place of catharsis and spiritual relief. Kiefer assembled an ultra-talented crew for this one, with jazz heavy-hitters like DJ Harrison, Andy McCauley, Josh Johnson, Will Logan, and Sam Wilkes performing in studio. Many of the songs were recorded in just one or two takes, the occasional musical flub left in to give the song a sense of spontaneity, urgency, and authenticity. It works. This is one of the most alive albums of 2021.
