Who Will You Believe (LP)
The Pernice Brothers
Amoeba Review
Joe Pernice wrote Who Will You Believe as a way of coping with a period of heavy loss in his life. After losing three good friends within a six-month period, Pernice felt compelled to simply "take nothing for granted." That simple appreciation for the beauty of life, the value of friendship, and the temporality of our time here on earth infuses each of the songs on the Pernice Brothers' latest. "December in Her Eyes" has the feel of yearning yet jaunty '60s pop, with keening violins and romantic horns. "I Don't Need That Anymore" gives a nod to classic country duets, with a typically incredible performance from the lovely-voiced Neko Case. "The Purple Rain" is lovely in its bittersweetness, a fitting finisher to this thoughtful, good-hearted album. Who Will You Believe is warm and inviting, even in the darkest of times.
