Zorked (CD)
Julia Shapiro
Amoeba Review
Chastity Belt’s Julia Shapiro wrote her second solo album, Zorked, after her move from Seattle to L.A. was immediately followed by the pandemic shutdown. Produced with her roommate Jay Som (Melina Duterte), the album has a 2020-appropriate theme of confusion and despair, but with Shapiro’s characteristic hints of humor. Tracks like “Death (XIII)” and “Come With Me” are heavy with sludgy guitar and subdued vocals, but they're also quite melodic and contain some of that dreamy atmosphere from 2019’s Perfect Version. “Wrong Time” is a little lighter with some shoegazey swirls of psychedelia.
