Kimya Dawson - Biography
Kimya Dawson is an indie-folk singer/songwriter best known for her work on the 2007 film soundtrack Juno and as Adam Green's counterpart in The Moldy Peaches. She is a Grammy winning, platinum-selling artist who has released six solo albums including I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean (Sanctuary Records, 2002) and Knock-Knock Who? (Important Records, 2003). After The Moldy Peaches went on hiatus in 2004, Dawson released Hidden Vagenda (K Records, 2004), My Cute Fiend Sweet Princess (Important, 2004), Remember That I Love You (K Records, 2006) and a children's album, Alphabutt (2007), on her own label Great Crap Factory.
Dawson's latest solo album, Thunder Thighs, was self-released October 18, 2011 on Great Crap Factory and features Aesop Rock, members of The Strokes, Mountain Goats, and Kimya's daughter, Panda. In September 2012, she was featured in a campaign called "30 Songs / 30 Days" to support Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
In addition to the Juno soundtrack, Dawson has lent her unique voice, anti-folk sentiment, and lo-fi sound to feature films including The Guatemalan Handshake and Glue, as well as the documentaries Body of War and Murderball. She has collaborated with artists including Ben Kweller, Third Eye Blind, Regina Spektor, They Might Be Giants, and Jeffrey Lewis. Dawson also started a band called "The Bundles," with Jeffrey and Jack Lewis and drummer Anders Griffen, though they released songs as "Kimya Dawson and Jeffrey Lewis."
