Murs - Biography
Originally from Los Angeles, Murs is an independent Hip-Hip emcee and member of multiple collaborations, including the Living Legends, 3 Melancholy Gypsys (3MG) and Felt. In addition to his solo releases, Murs has been featured on several influential indie rap albums, working with a number of artists since the '90s.
3MG (Murs, Eligh, and Scarub) self-released their first album in 1993, joining Mystik Journeymen when they started the Living Legends collective in the Bay Area in 1996. The Living Legends remained independent from record labels, relying instead on heavy self-promotion, selling cassette tapes out of their cars, and touring heavily.
After ten years working as a group member, Murs released his first solo album The End of the Beginning (Definitive Jux) in 2003. Murs returned with another solo album Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, in 2004, a collaboration with Justus League beatmaker, 9th Wonder. In 2005, Murs made his directorial debut with the indie flick Walk Like a Man, a film starring Murs and Damien Wigfall that was inspired by a track on Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition.
Also in 2005, Murs and Anticon rapper Slug recorded more experimental tracks under the name Felt, releasing A Tribute to Christina Ricci (Rhymesayers), A Tribute to Lisa Bonet (Rhymesayers), and most recently in 2009, A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Rhymesayers), which was produced by Aesop Rock.
Murs signed to Warner Bros., releasing his major label debut Murs For President (2008), which featured Snoop Dogg, punk band Whole Wheat Bread, will.i.am, and DJ Premier. Murs's most recent solo album, Love & Rockets, Vol. 1: The Transformation, came out in October 2011, but he continues to work steadily on other projects. In March 2012, Murs completed a Kickstarter campaign for a new graphic novel and 10-song album called Yumiko: Curse Of The Merch Girl. In July 2012, Murs and Whole Wheat Bread released a six song EP called Murs and Whole Wheat Bread Are The Invincibles. On September 25, 2012 Murs and Fashawn released a collaboration called This Generation on Duck Down Records. Also in 2012 Murs released a second collaboration, this time with 9th Wonder, called Final Adventure (It's a Wonderful World)
