Black Flame Eternal (LP)
CLOAK
This band plays a great mixture of black, goth and synth metal that is easy to digest and leaves you feeling satisfied. Don’t get me wrong, there is genuine darkness, aggression and sincerity of all things metal to be found on this album, as well as cohesion and strong song composition without scarfing the flame of metal. Two horns up!

THY CATAFALQUE
An ever evolving music project, Thy Catafalque’s approach to making metal that reaches beyond easy genre defining boundaries, and succeeds on this particular album. Most musicians have a hard time combing such desperate elements like folk, electronic and metal into a recipe that works. If you’re looking for a metal album to help cleanse palate, that still has enough aggression and metal to be metal. Look no further.

VILE RITUAL
Guitars that feel suffocating, guttural vocals, thick drums buried in some kind of sludge while being projected from a cave...it’s that good.

SUTEKH HEXEN & FUNERARY CALL
Serious sonic atmosphere nightmare inducing spectrums of black metal that is expressed in a massive cocoon of experimental miasma and mystical passages. BAABA MAAL
Yet another album that is going on my best of the year list. Incredible Senegalese musician that delivers us a fusion of both familiar music and unfamiliar, mixed in elements of groove, pop and desert rock that has helped open new musical ideas and possiblities. This music speaks to ones heart as well as ones ears. It is transformative and healing as well as something that you can simply enjoy for the infectious bass lines and subwoofer shaking rhythms.

Water Witches (CD)
Rainforest Spiritual
One of Dominick Fernow’s many many experimental projects. Similar to his main alias, Prurient, the RSE makes gritty industrial-noise themed around jungles and witchcraft. It’s equally spooky as it is intense. This box set contains the band’s first several EPs that were initially only released on cassette. It was very exciting to see that it got a proper CD release complete with excellent packaging. It’s everything a Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement fan could ask for.

100 Gecs
The long awaited follow-up to one of the goofiest duos in modern pop. Their first album is an absolute banger and one of the prime examples of hyperpop. While this one is a bit on the rockier side, it’s still completely bonkers! They’re also an insanely killer band to see live!

La Monte Young
I am THRILLED that this got a proper release. In the world of drone music, La Monte Young is THE guy. Back in the 60’s, his whole thing was studying “sustained notes” and incorporating that into his pieces. This particular album- colloquially known as "The Black Album"- is one of Young’s earliest releases with an initial pressing of 1000 LP copies in 1969. It’s been bootlegged copious amounts of times over the years with varying degrees of sound quality. But at long last, there’s finally an official release on both CD and LP that sounds excellent. Any fan of drone NEEDS to own this one in their collection. Here’s a tip: if you own the vinyl copy, try adjusting the speed while listening.
