Sky Ferreira - Biography
Sky Ferreira is a singer, songwriter, model and actress. Born in Venice, CA Ferreira was raised by her grandmother who was a hairstylist for Michael Jackson. Encouraged by Jackson to study opera and sing gospel music at age 12, Ferreira began uploading songs to MySpace. She signed her first recording contract with UK-based Parlophone Records in 2009, at age 17, and collaborated with pop songwriters and producers, including Bloodshy & Avant and Linda Perry.
Ferreira's debut album was originally scheduled for release in 2011, but was postponed, with the As If EP released instead in March 2011 (Parlophone). At the same time, Ferreira was pursuing a modeling career. She signed with IMG and was featured in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Forever 21, and Redken, and appeared in Vogue, W and Interview magazines.
Her album was set for release in 2012 and was again replaced with an EP, Ghost (Capitol), which included a collaboration with Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange) and Ariel Rechtshaid called "Everything is Embarrassing." The song was praised by media outlets including Pitchfork, Spin, and Billboard, became wildly popular online, and led to her performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
In 2013, in addition to her modeling and singing careers, Ferreira appeared in a short film, IRL, and feature-length, The Green Inferno. Later that year, while performing with Vampire Weekend, Ferreira injured her vocal chords and was forced to withdraw from the tour.
Night Time, My Time (Capitol), Ferreira's debut full-length album, was finally released in the UK in October 2013 and in the US in January 2014. Four years in the making, the album debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at number 45, was named by Rolling Stone as their #5 debut album of 2013, and was Complex Magazine's #25 on their list of the 50 Best Albums of 2013. Ferreira performed at Amoeba Hollywood on February 19, 2014, shortly before going on tour with Miley Cyrus. Two days later, Ferreira injured herself while on stage in Anaheim, CA resulting in 60 stitches and a temporary withdrawal from the tour.
