The Hellcows - Biography

By Marcus Kagler

The Hellcows were a Portland, Oregon art rock quintet closely linked to the noise rock band Smegma. Disciples of the Captain Beefheart aesthetic, The Hellcows released their debut EP, G-Spot Crush (Pigface Records/Black Label Records) in 1987, with their debut full length, Toothless (Black Label Records) following a year later. The split 7” single with Smegma, Idiodyssey, appeared in 1989. Before disbanding sometime in the early 90’s the group released the Paver EP in 1991. Bassist Carl Annala and guitarist Eric Stotick later reunited to form the band Plastic Horn Devil, a name taken from a lyric in the Beefheart song “Telephone.”
